Matthews Real Estate Investment Services is looking for a self-motivated staff accountant to join the team. The staff accountant position has a primary responsibility for managing General Accounting, Accounts Payable and Receivable, and Payroll operations and participating in special projects as applicable. This person will also be responsible for the management of corporate and all business unit general ledgers and ensuring that accounts are reconciled in accordance with GAAP and policies, procedures and internal controls are followed and enforced. We are looking for a self-starter that can identify and implement process improvements and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing day to day accounting tasks for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and month-end closing activities, with the goal of producing accurate financial statements while adhering to appropriate internal controls
  • Participate in analyzing, evaluating, recommending, and implementing new accounting and financial policies, methods, procedures, and spreadsheets designed to improve information and efficiency
  • Review accounts payable and accounts receivables transactions for the proper account, departmental, location, and division coding
  • Book recurring and month-end journal entries; perform month-end close reconciliations of several GL accounts for multiple entities
  • Cash management – analyze and accurately reconcile various bank accounts and credit cards
  • Assist with month-end closings as required including analysis of unusual expense fluctuations
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for 50+ employees
  • Complete appropriate 1099 reports at year end and file accordingly with the IRS
  • Assist Controller with sales tax, business tax and other local state tax filings
  • Assist with financial and tax audits
  • Assist with special projects, as needed

 

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • CPA license or working towards CPA licensure a plus
  • 3+ years of accounting experience (experience within the real estate industry is a plus)
  • High proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPS and various commonly used formulas in the accounting industry)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct (Bill.com, Expensify, Tradeshift and FloQast a plus)
